Soulful Surrender: The Night I Remembered to Take Care of Me

Sunday night’s Soulful Surrender class with Mark was one of those quiet but powerful reminders of why we practice at all—not for perfection, not for performance, but for the simple act of returning to ourselves.

We began with the 4-7-8 breath, a pattern I’ve always deeply enjoyed. There’s something about the structure of it—the inhale, the pause, the long slow exhale—that feels like a conversation with the nervous system. The holds, the kumbhaka, felt especially grounding this time. In yoga, breath retention isn’t just a technique; it’s a space. A moment suspended between effort and release. Sitting there in the stillness of the holds, I could feel my mind soften and my body begin to settle, like sediment drifting to the bottom of a glass of water.

From there, we transitioned into a gentle rhythm of five counts in, five counts out. This steady, even breathing created a quiet steadiness in the room. No striving, no pushing—just a simple, balanced flow. It felt less like doing a technique and more like remembering something ancient and natural within me.

By the time we moved into legs up the wall, my body was starting to unwind in that familiar restorative way. My nervous system was calm, my breath was smooth, and I felt that subtle sense of spaciousness that comes when you allow yourself to slow down.

And then… there it was.
A nagging tension in my left shoulder, right around the rhomboid area. That kind of tension that doesn’t scream, but definitely whispers persistently enough to be noticed. I found myself thinking, ugh, I just want this to release. It’s funny how we can drop into such deep relaxation and still find these little pockets of resistance holding on, like they missed the memo that it’s safe to let go.

I stayed with it. I breathed. I adjusted slightly, hoping for that satisfying melt that sometimes comes when a muscle finally gives in. It didn’t fully release in that moment, but what shifted was my relationship to it. Instead of fighting the tension, I began to observe it. There was a quiet lesson in that: surrender isn’t always about things disappearing—it’s often about softening our grip on needing them to.

Somewhere in that stillness, another feeling bubbled up unexpectedly: pride. And I had to laugh at myself a little—like, wow, look at me, I actually took time for me. It sounds simple, almost silly, but as caregivers, guides, and busy humans, we know how easy it is to pour into everyone else while leaving our own cup running low.

There I was, legs up the wall, shoulder slightly annoyed, and yet feeling this genuine warmth toward myself for showing up. For carving out that time. For choosing rest instead of another task, another responsibility, another excuse.

That moment felt just as healing as the breathwork itself.

Retreats, private sessions, yoga or breathwork sessions aren't always about dramatic breakthroughs every time. Sometimes it’s quieter than that. It’s the nervous system exhaling. It’s noticing where you’re still holding on. It’s allowing yourself to feel both the tension and the tenderness at the same time.

Practicing with Mark reminded me how powerful it is to be held in a shared space of intention. There’s something about breathing together in a room—knowing others are also softening, also releasing, also navigating their own aches and emotions—that makes the experience deeper. More human.

I left class not completely tension-free, but calmer, more present, and oddly proud of myself. And maybe that’s the real gift of these practices: they don’t just change our bodies in the moment—they reshape how we treat ourselves.

Last night, I didn’t fix everything. I didn’t magically melt every knot away.
But I listened.
I paused.
I breathed.
And I showed up for myself.

And honestly, that felt like enough.

Notice. Feel. Just Be.

There’s a little secret in yoga that most people never really talk about. It’s not the perfect pose, the Instagram-worthy arm balance, or how bendy you can get. Nope. The real magic happens when you slow down enough to Notice. Feel. And just Be.

           Notice.

Step onto your mat and take a breath. Really take it. What’s happening in your body? Is your shoulder creeping up near your ear again? Are your hips screaming at you from last week’s hike? Maybe your mind is already off in the grocery store, thinking about that thing you forgot to do. Notice it all. The tightness, the tension, the wandering thoughts. This is not a judgment zone—it’s an observation station. Think of it like checking the weather before you head outside. “Ah, it’s a bit stormy in my neck today. Noted.”

           Feel.

Now comes the fun part. Move into your pose, and actually feel it. Feel your feet rooting, your spine stretching, your ribs opening, your breath dancing through your chest. Feel that awkward wobble in Warrior II? That’s your body talking to you—listen. Feel the strength, the stretch, the release, the weird little shiver that comes when your body says, “Oh, we’re awake now.” And yes, sometimes it might tickle, sometimes it might scream. Either way, feel it.

           Just Be.

Finally… just be. Let go of “doing” and all the mental chatter about whether you’re doing it right, looking right, or thinking right. Just exist in this moment, in this pose, in this body. Be the wobble, be the stretch, be the sigh that escapes your lips. Be the calm, be the chaos, be the perfectly imperfect version of you on your mat. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll notice life feels a little lighter when you step off the mat too.

If you’ve ever taken a class with me, you’ve probably heard me say this: notice, feel, and then just be. It’s more than a cue—it’s a little invitation to drop into your body, slow your mind, and remember what it feels like to truly exist in your own skin.

Yoga isn’t about the destination or the shape you can twist into. It’s about noticing, feeling, and just being—messy, funny, human, alive. So next time you’re on your mat, give yourself permission to do all three. You might surprise yourself with how good it feels.

When Rest Feels Hard: The Secret Struggle of Pitta Doshas in Restorative Yoga

No one talks about how hard it is… so let’s talk about it.

We all see the Instagram photos of people blissfully draped over bolsters, wrapped in blankets, bathed in lavender clouds like they're floating between realms.

           But the truth?

            If you’re a

           Pitta dosha

—the fiery, driven, productive, laser-focused type—

restorative yoga and savasana can feel like an Olympic-level challenge

           .

While everyone else looks like they’ve dissolved into the mat, YOU might be lying there thinking:

“I could be doing something more productive.”

“Did I turn the stove off? Did I respond to that email?”

“Why is this pose taking so long—can we optimize this?”

“I should reorganize my life. Right now. While immobile.”

“My blanket isn’t perfectly aligned… is this unevenness my karma?”

           If you know, you know.

            Pitta energy is

           brilliant

—sharp, determined, visionary, passionate. These are the leaders, creators, healers, entrepreneurs, protectors… the ones who make things happen. The world needs that fire.

           But here’s the shadow side:

When Pitta rises too high, stillness becomes uncomfortable.

            Slowness feels inefficient.

Rest feels like you’re falling behind.

Savasana feels like torture by inactivity.

And here’s the truth no one says out loud:

Restorative yoga is one of the most powerful medicines for Pitta… BECAUSE it’s the exact opposite of their default setting.

           Where Pitta pushes, restorative receives.

           Where Pitta drives, restorative softens.

           Where Pitta heats, restorative cools.

Where Pitta fixes, restores, and organizes… restorative says, “Sweetheart, lay down. Let the Earth hold you.”

           It’s not punishment.

           It’s purification.

           It’s recalibration.

           It’s remembrance.

When a Pitta dosha lies down in a restorative posture, something sacred begins to unravel. The body unwinds. The breath slows. The edges soften. And the nervous system whispers:

“You don’t have to earn your rest here.”

The mind will resist at first—oh yes, it will fight to stay in control. That’s part of the practice. Years of internal pressure don’t melt in five minutes.

But the beauty is in the persistence.

Breath by breath, you learn a new kind of strength:

           **The strength to stay.

           The strength to soften.

The strength to surrender fire into stillness.**

           This is the Pitta initiation.

This is where transformation actually happens.

So if you’re a Pitta who feels personally attacked by savasana…

           You’re not alone.

           You’re not failing.

           You’re not “bad at yoga.”

You’re just meeting the part of yourself that has never been allowed to rest.

And that is a sacred encounter.

           Your fire is your gift.

Learning to rest inside it is your superpower.

Savasana: The Art of Letting Go

II can still remember when I first started practicing yoga, lying in savasana and wondering,

           Am I doing this right?

My mind would race. My body would fidget. And when the teacher invited us to roll to one side, I didn’t know if it mattered—or why.

Over time, I’ve learned that savasana isn’t about “getting it right.” It’s about learning to surrender. And surrender looks different for each of us, and even for the same person depending on the day.

Like yoga itself, savasana is a shape-shifter—sometimes seen as nothing more than an athletic cool-down, sometimes confused with Yoga Nidra. But really, savasana is its own practice, and one of the most profound gifts yoga offers.

Here are a few lessons I’ve gathered along the way:

           Which side to turn?

It depends on what you need. Rolling to the left activates energy and clarity, making it a lovely way to transition out of a morning practice. Rolling to the right supports reflection, rest, and softness—beautiful before bed or after an evening session.

Do I have to lie flat on my back?

Not at all. Savasana isn’t about a shape—it’s about an experience. You can lie on your side, your stomach, supported by bolsters, even in a chair or bed. The only requirement is that your body feels safe enough to let go and melt into gravity.

           Can savasana stand alone?

Yes—and this might be my favorite discovery. Shavasana by itself is a complete practice. You don’t need 60 minutes on the mat for your yoga to “count.” Sometimes what your body and soul need most is just 10 minutes of stillness. That is yoga.

           Can I begin with savasana?

Absolutely. What matters most is asking yourself: Why am I practicing today? If the answer calls you to begin in stillness, listen. If it calls you to end there, listen. Yoga is about tuning in to your inner wisdom, not following a rigid sequence.

           The Myths of Savasana

           Myth #1: It’s just a pose.

Truth: Savasana is a sacred journey inward. It is a daily practice of letting go, of dying to all the noise and distraction, and being reborn into presence. It is so much more than a pose—it’s a pilgrimage into stillness.

           Myth #2: It’s optional.

Truth: Rest is not optional. Integration is not optional. Savasana allows your nervous system to settle, your energy to balance, and your spirit to come home to itself. It may be the most important part of your practice.

Myth #3: It’s the same as Yoga Nidra.

Truth: While both are powerful, they are not the same. Savasana bridges breathwork and meditation, while Yoga Nidra bridges meditation and expanded consciousness. Each has its purpose, but they serve different roles in your practice.

           The Heart of Savasana

At its core, savasana is a practice of remembrance. It’s the pause where everything else falls away—your to-do list, your roles, your worries—and you return to the still, quiet center within.

When we allow ourselves to rest here, we touch a deeper truth: that we are more than our doing, more than our striving. We are wholeness, exactly as we are.

So the next time you find yourself in savasana, whether for two minutes or twenty, let go of the “rules.” Let it be what you need it to be. Begin with it, end with it, or practice it all on its own. What matters is that you listen—and surrender.

That’s where the real yoga begins.

Anxiety and Fear Are Seductive: Finding Balance Through Yoga, Meditation, and Ayurveda

You are not your fear. You are not your anxiety. You are the stillness beneath it all.

I’ve come to realize something over the years—anxiety and fear can feel almost seductive. They sneak in quietly, then pull us into loops of “what ifs” and imagined futures. The mind convinces us that if we keep spinning the story, maybe we’ll find safety or control.

But what I’ve learned—for myself and for so many women I’ve guided—is that fear and anxiety don’t give us control. They take it. They drain our energy, keep us from resting, and separate us from the wisdom that lives in our bodies and our souls.

The beauty is that we don’t have to stay there. Yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda each offer us gentle but powerful ways to step out of the loop and back into balance.

Yoga: Coming Back Into the Body

When fear rises, my breath is often the first to change—it gets shallow, tight, almost like I’m holding it. The body tenses as if danger is right in front of me. That’s where yoga becomes such a gift.

           Simple postures like

           Mountain Pose

            or curling into

           Child’s Pose

remind me: I am here. I am safe. Even just pausing for a few minutes of mindful stretching shifts everything. The body anchors us back into the present, and the nervous system begins to soften.

Meditation has taught me that I don’t have to believe every story my mind tells. Fear will always try to seduce us, pulling us into “what if,” but we can learn to watch those thoughts instead of climbing inside them.

When I come back to my breath, or repeat a mantra, I notice space opening. And in that space, I remember that anxiety is not who I am—it’s just passing energy. That awareness is liberating.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, fear and anxiety often point to an imbalance in

           Remembering Who We Are

Fear and anxiety may be seductive, but they are not the truth of who we are. When we come back to practices that nourish us, we remember our steadiness, our clarity, our peace.

This is why I love creating retreat spaces. At Blisstopia, women are invited to step out of the noise and back into their bodies, their breath, and their own inner wisdom. We heal together, in community, and we remember that peace is always within reach.

You are not your fear. You are not your anxiety. You are the stillness beneath it all.

You’ve probably done Malasana (a.k.a. yogi squat) in class—maybe you love it, maybe you tolerate it—but I’m here to tell you: this pose is a low-key powerhouse.

Yes, it’s great for your hips.

Yes, it opens the groin and releases the low back.

But there are some lesser-known benefits of Malasana that might surprise you—and they’re exactly why I teach it at every Blisstopia Retreat.

3 Unusual Benefits of Malasana that You May Have Never Heard Of:

           1. It Reawakens Your Root Wisdom

In Malasana, your pelvic floor reconnects with the ground (literally).

This isn’t just physical—it’s energetic. When your heels root and your perineum lowers toward the earth, you’re actually stimulating your first chakra (root chakra), which signals to your nervous system:

           “Hey, you’re safe now.”

It’s like a mini-reset for your primal wiring.

           Fight-or-flight? Off.

Rest, digest, and trust life? On.

           2. It Restores Your Natural Squatting Blueprint

Here’s the wild truth: Your body is meant to squat like this.

For millennia, humans rested, ate, gave birth, and even went to the bathroom in this position. When you practice Malasana, you’re not just stretching—you’re retraining your joints and fascia to remember their original blueprint.

This can actually reduce knee and hip degeneration over time, because you’re creating real, functional mobility—not just showy flexibility.

           3. It Boosts Digestive Flow (In a Non-Cliché Way)

We’ve all heard "yoga helps digestion," but here’s the deeper why:

In Malasana, your puborectalis muscle (yes, it’s real and yes, it matters!) relaxes, allowing your colon to shift into its natural position for elimination.

This is why so many cultures still squat to go #2—and why Malasana can help with constipation, bloating, and sluggish digestion. It’s your body’s natural way of saying, “Let’s keep things moving, friend.”

It’s one of those poses that helps you come back home to yourself—quietly, powerfully, without a whole production.

           Try This:

Next time you’re stressed, bloated, or feel disconnected—drop into Malasana for 60 seconds.

           Breathe.

           Feel your roots.

           That’s yoga that actually works.

           1. Stress is a Signal, Not an Enemy

Many of us see stress as something to fight or suppress. But stress is actually a message from your body and mind that something is out of alignment. Instead of resisting it, ask what it’s trying to tell you. Use inquiry as a tool.

Place your hand over your heart, take a deep breath, and ask: What is my stress trying to show me?

Write down the first three words that come to mind—this is your starting point for healing.

The way we breathe determines how we feel. When stressed, we default to shallow, rapid breathing, which tells the body it's in survival mode.

Our subconscious absorbs our repeated thoughts as truth. If you constantly think, I’m overwhelmed, your body and brain respond accordingly.

           5. Visualization Rewires Stress Responses

The brain doesn’t distinguish between real experiences and vividly imagined ones. If you constantly anticipate stress, your brain wires itself to expect it. But if you visualize peace, your brain learns a new default state.

‍♀️ Why We Love Lizard Pose

Lizard Pose is a powerful addition to any yoga practice. It’s like a personal invitation to explore your inner landscape. Physically, it offers a serious stretch for your hips, hamstrings, and groin. Emotionally? It’s a gateway to unlocking stored tension and emotional blockages — because, let’s face it, we tend to carry a lot in those hips!

Fun Fact: The Lizard in Yoga Mythology

While Utthan Pristhasana may not have direct roots in ancient mythology, lizards often symbolize resilience, adaptability, and the ability to navigate both the spiritual and physical realms. In many traditions, they are seen as creatures of transformation and rebirth — a perfect reflection of what we experience on the mat when we open our hips and release stored energy.

Supine Twist, or Supta Matsyendrasana, is a simple yet powerful yoga posture that offers a range of physical, mental, and energetic benefits. Whether you’re winding down after a long day or seeking a gentle way to release tension, this pose is a go-to for many practitioners.

           The Benefits of Supine Twist

            Spinal Health and Flexibility:

Supine Twist gently stretches and lengthens the spine, helping to release tension from the lower back. It promotes spinal flexibility and improves mobility, which is especially beneficial for those with sedentary lifestyles.

            Detoxification and Digestion:

The twisting motion stimulates the abdominal organs, aiding in digestion and promoting detoxification. It’s an excellent pose for improving gut health and relieving bloating or discomfort.

            Stress Relief and Relaxation:

As a restorative posture, Supine Twist encourages deep relaxation and soothes the nervous system. This makes it a perfect pose to incorporate at the end of your practice or before bed to support better sleep.

            Balanced Energy Flow:

Twists are known to balance the body’s energy by engaging and harmonizing the right and left sides of the body. This pose helps clear energetic blockages and aligns you with a sense of equilibrium.

           Why the Right Knee First?

When practicing Supine Twist, many yoga traditions emphasize bringing the right knee in first and twisting to the left. This sequence is intentional and rooted in the body’s natural energy flow:

            Alignment with Digestive Flow:

Twisting to the left first aligns with the natural direction of the colon, helping to stimulate digestion and encourage detoxification. This supports the body’s elimination process more effectively.

            Balancing the Nadis (Energy Channels):

In yoga philosophy, the body has two main energy channels, the Ida (left) and Pingala (right) nadis. Starting on the right side helps balance these channels, promoting a state of harmony and well-being.

            Supporting the Heart:

Twisting to the left first places gentle compression on the heart area, which can stimulate circulation and promote feelings of relaxation and openness.

           Tips for Practicing Supine Twist

            Start with the Right Knee:

Lie on your back, bring your right knee in toward your chest, and guide it across your body to the left.

            Keep Both Shoulders Grounded:

Ensure your shoulders stay connected to the mat for a deeper spinal stretch.

            Breathe Deeply:

Focus on deep, even breaths to enhance relaxation and release tension.

Incorporating Supine Twist into your practice can leave you feeling refreshed, aligned, and at peace. By mindfully moving with intention—starting with the right knee—you’ll maximize the pose’s benefits for both body and soul.

5 Keys to Mastering the Art of Inner Stillness

Hello, beautiful soul. Welcome to this space—a space where the mind gets quieter, the heart opens wider, and your true self steps forward. Whether you’re new to meditation or you’ve been sitting cross-legged long enough to master the perfect “zen stare,” let’s dive into the heart of what makes meditation the life-changing practice it is. And yes, we’ll keep it light because laughter is, after all, medicine for the soul.

           1. Start Where You Are

Meditation isn’t about perfection; it’s about presence.
Think you need to silence your mind completely? Good luck with that. Even the Dalai Lama has thoughts during meditation—he’s just learned to let them pass, like clouds in the sky. If your mind wanders to your grocery list or that one awkward thing you said in high school, gently bring it back. Meditation isn’t about erasing thoughts; it’s about not clinging to them.

           Pro Tip:

Start small—5 minutes a day is enough to begin. Sit, breathe, and notice the magic of simply being.

           2. Create Your Sacred Space

Let’s be real: meditating in the middle of chaos (a barking dog, kids yelling, or the neighbor’s lawnmower) is a challenge even for seasoned practitioners. Designate a quiet, inviting spot in your home—a cushion, a chair, even a corner with a candle—and make it your meditation sanctuary.

           Friendly Reminder:

It doesn’t need to be fancy. Your soul doesn’t care if you have a designer meditation cushion or just a soft throw pillow.

           3. Breathe Like You Mean It

Breath is the bridge between your body and mind. The simplest way to meditate is to close your eyes and focus on your breath. Feel the cool inhale and the warm exhale. It’s subtle, but this practice centers you in the present moment.

           Quick Exercise:

Try this: Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 6 counts. Repeat a few times and feel your nervous system settle into peace mode. (You might even get that “ahhh” feeling.)

           4. Embrace the Discomfort

Meditation isn’t always blissful. Some days, your back aches, your mind feels like a runaway train, or your emotions bubble up. That’s okay. The discomfort is part of the process—it’s your soul releasing what no longer serves you.

           Reframe It:

            Instead of thinking,

“Ugh, I’m bad at this,” think, “This is my practice working. Look at all this stuff I’m letting go of!”

           5. Let Go of Expectations

Spoiler alert: Meditation won’t make you immune to stress, turn you into a glowing guru overnight, or grant you magical powers (although, wouldn’t that be fun?). What it will do is give you the space to respond to life instead of reacting to it. It helps you reconnect with the infinite calm and clarity already within you.

           Remember:

There’s no “right” way to meditate. There’s only your way.

Meditation Is the Journey, Not the Destination

Meditation isn’t about “getting somewhere.” It’s about coming home to yourself. It’s about being okay with the beautiful, messy, human experience. And hey, if you can laugh at yourself along the way, you’re already ahead of the game.

So, whether you’re sitting down for the first time or diving deeper into your practice, remember: every breath is a step closer to your center. You’ve got this.

Now, take a deep breath and enjoy the magic of simply being.

Autumn Flow

           Hello beautiful one!✨

Most mornings, as the first light spills over the Sonoran Desert Valley and the Sunrise Mountain in our backyard, I wander outside to greet the day—the warmth, the plants, the rugged beauty that surrounds Blisstopia Retreats.

I settle among the chickens, chaparral and mesquite trees, letting the stillness of dawn guide me as I set my intentions. Now that the desert is shifting from summer’s intensity into fall’s softer touch literally overnight, the landscape transforms with new energy, as if the desert taking in a long deep cool breath getting a reprieve from the long summer’s heat.

This morning, as I sat in our wild space watching nature wake up with crispness in the air, it struck me—when change comes, nature just lets go. There’s no resistance, no holding on. It’s as if every tree, every bud, just knows: when it’s time, it’s time. There’s trust in the flow, even as the colors change and things shift toward darkness.

But we humans? We like to hold on, don’t we?

Change feels heavy, unsettling, unfamiliar. We’re so good at clinging to what we know, even if it’s not quite right for us. It’s like we’re wired to resist, to stay in our comfort zone, even when we feel the nudge to move forward. We may not like the job, but taking a leap seems impossible. Or we know our health could be better, but we find reasons to avoid that morning walk.

We fight ourselves, making every change feel bigger than it is. We tell ourselves, “That’s just how things are.” Or, “I’ve dealt with this before, and I’m doing okay.” But nature? Nature reminds us there’s another way.

When I watch the trees, the desert rocks, and the saguaro cactus around me, they seem to offer a quiet wisdom. If we slow down and listen, nature speaks—not with words, but through presence, guiding us to a deeper, more accepting state of being.

           So, here’s what I’m learning

if we can pause, even for 10 minutes, and observe, we’ll start to see our patterns. We’ll notice where we’re holding on too tightly, where we’re resisting. And maybe, we’ll begin to trust that just like the desert blooms and fades in its perfect cycle, we, too, are being guided. All we have to do is allow.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to start a small practice. Maybe take a different path on your way home, a slower route where you can take in the autumn breeze. Or instead of reaching for your phone first thing, let your eyes stay closed and feel the warmth of the morning sun, listen to the birdsong, and feel gratitude for the gentle breeze.

Find a little something that feels easy, that sparks a sense of wonder and try it for a week. I promise, with a little consistency—not perfection—you’ll start to see the world a bit differently. Let’s see where this flow will take us.

Samana Mudra: Balance & Inner Harmony at Your Fingertips

Have you ever noticed how, on some days, your energy feels scattered, like you're being pulled in every direction? That feeling of imbalance often indicates that our prana (life force) is not centered. Enter Samana Mudra—a powerful hand gesture that helps to bring harmony back to your energy.

In yogic traditions, mudras are considered energetic seals, gestures that help direct prana in specific ways to achieve physical, mental, and spiritual balance. Samana Mudra is one of those hidden gems that can help bring all aspects of your being—body, mind, and spirit—into alignment.

           What is Samana Mudra?

Samana Mudra is known as the "Mudra of Balance" because it represents the harmony of the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether) within us. When we bring these elements into equilibrium, we feel more centered and balanced, both internally and externally.

In Ayurveda, these five elements are responsible for maintaining the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), and imbalances in these elements can lead to physical and emotional distress. Practicing Samana Mudra helps restore that delicate balance, especially when we feel overwhelmed or out of sync with our natural rhythms.

           How to Practice Samana Mudra

Sit comfortably in a cross-legged position or on a chair with your spine straight.

Bring the tips of all five fingers of each hand together, forming a cone-like shape.

Rest your hands on your knees or thighs, palms facing up.

Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and feel the balance settling within you.

Practice for 5–10 minutes to experience its full benefits.

           When to Use Samana Mudra

This mudra is especially beneficial when:

You feel mentally scattered or unfocused.

You need grounding and centering, especially after a long day.

You're experiencing digestive issues (hello, sluggish metabolism!).

You're seeking balance between work, personal life, and inner peace.

During transitions—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual.

You want to harmonize your energy before meditation or yoga practice.

           Benefits of Samana Mudra

             Balances the five elements:

By bringing the five elements into harmony, this mudra helps you feel more centered and aligned.

            Enhances digestion:

Known for aiding digestion, it activates Samana Vayu, the energy that governs assimilation and distribution of nutrients in the body.

            Improves focus:

It helps still the mind, making it easier to focus and concentrate.

            Brings inner peace:

When our internal elements are in balance, we experience a sense of calm and peace.

Samana Mudra is deeply rooted in ancient yogic and Ayurvedic practices. In Ayurveda, the term Samana Vayu refers to one of the five major pranas or life forces in the body. This particular prana governs digestion and balance. Yogis have long practiced this mudra to create equilibrium within the body and mind, believing that through the hands, we can manipulate the energy that flows within us.

Historically, yogic texts often discuss the use of mudras as a way to control prana and connect with the higher self. By practicing mudras like Samana, ancient yogis could direct their energy toward health, well-being, and spiritual awakening.

Samana Mudra is like a reset button for your energy—bringing balance, clarity, and peace. Whether you're looking to center yourself in a hectic world or find equilibrium within, this simple yet powerful practice can support your journey toward inner harmony.

Remember, balance is not something we achieve once and keep forever. It's a daily practice, and with Samana Mudra, you can invite more balance into your life—one breath, one gesture, at a time.

Artichoke Quinoa Spinach Bake with Coconut Milk

This nourishing dish is a favorite at my retreats because it perfectly balances the mind, body, and spirit. It’s rich in grounding and rejuvenating ingredients, making it an ideal offering for those looking to nourish their digestive fire (Agni) without feeling heavy. Quinoa is a sattvic grain, high in prana (life force), and artichokes aid in liver detoxification, helping to clear ama (toxins). Spinach provides cooling, yet energizing, qualities while coconut milk adds a rich, hydrating element for all doshas, especially Pitta and Vata. This dish promotes clarity and energy during retreat practices, like meditation and mindful movement.

           Ingredients:

           Instructions:

            Prepare the quinoa:

In a medium saucepan, combine quinoa, coconut milk, and vegetable broth or water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until quinoa is cooked and fluffy.

             Sauté the aromatics:

In a skillet, heat olive oil or ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds to release their aroma. Add chopped onion, garlic, and sauté until translucent.

             Add spices and vegetables:

Stir in turmeric, ground coriander, and black pepper. Then, add chopped spinach and artichoke hearts. Cook for 3-5 minutes until the spinach wilts and everything is well combined.

            Mix and bake:

Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked quinoa with the sautéed vegetables. Season with salt. Transfer the mixture to a lightly greased baking dish and bake for 30-35 minutes until the top is slightly golden.

            Garnish and serve:

Let the bake cool slightly, then garnish with fresh cilantro. Serve warm and enjoy!

Why I Love This Dish for Retreats:

This bake is easy to prepare and serves as a grounding meal during retreats. It’s light enough to keep energy levels high, but also deeply nourishing to support the body through intensive spiritual practices. The coconut milk gives a creamy texture without heaviness, helping guests feel both satisfied and refreshed. It’s a one-dish wonder that brings balance to the doshas, making it a versatile addition to any retreat menu.

           Understanding Spiritual Detoxing:

At its core, spiritual detoxing is about releasing what no longer serves us and inviting in fresh, positive energy. This process involves purifying our thoughts, emotions, and environments to create space for growth, healing, and spiritual evolution. Just as a physical detox might involve eliminating unhealthy foods or habits, a spiritual detox involves letting go of negative patterns, beliefs, and attachments that weigh us down.

Spiritual detoxing opens the channels for divine guidance and inspiration, deepening our connection to the higher self, spirit guides, and the universe.

Letting go of old patterns and beliefs creates space for new intentions and aspirations to take root, guiding us towards our highest potential.
As we cleanse our own energy, we become more present and compassionate in our interactions with others, fostering deeper and more authentic connections.

Unlocking the Energy Healing Experience:

3 Key Outcomes of a Healing Touch/Reiki Session

In a world filled with stress, anxiety, and constant busyness, finding moments of peace and tranquility can feel like a rare luxury. Yet, amidst the chaos, there exists a gentle yet powerful practice known as Healing Touch and Reiki, which offers profound benefits for both the body and mind.

Whether you're a newcomer to energy healing or a seasoned practitioner, here are three key results you can expect from getting a session:

            Deep Relaxation and Stress Reduction:

One of the most immediate and tangible effects of an energy healing session is deep relaxation. As the practitioner channels healing energy through gentle touch or hands hovering over the body, clients often experience a sense of calm washing over them. This relaxation response triggers the body's parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to counteract the effects of chronic stress. By inducing a state of deep relaxation, energy healing promotes stress reduction, lowers blood pressure, and supports overall well-being.

             Energetic Balancing and Emotional Release:

Energy Healing works on a subtle yet profound level to balance the body's energy centers, known as chakras, and remove energetic imbalances. These imbalances can manifest as physical discomfort, emotional distress, or mental fog. During a session, clients may experience sensations such as warmth, tingling, or gentle pulsations as the energy flows through them, releasing stagnant energy and promoting a sense of emotional release and clarity. Many people report feeling lighter, more grounded, and more emotionally resilient after a session.

             Enhanced Healing and Self-Discovery:

Beyond the physical and emotional benefits, Energy Healing has the potential to catalyze profound healing and self-discovery. By tapping into the body's innate healing intelligence, it supports the body's natural ability to heal itself on all levels - physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Clients often report experiencing insights, epiphanies, or a heightened sense of intuition during or after a session. This newfound clarity can illuminate areas of their lives that may need attention or provide validation for their intuitive knowing. As a result, energy healing becomes not just a healing modality but a catalyst for personal growth, self-awareness, and spiritual awakening.

So, if you have been wondering about a session, energy healing offers far more than just a temporary escape from the stresses of everyday life. It provides a pathway to deep relaxation, energetic balance, emotional release, and profound healing. Whether you're seeking relief from physical ailments, emotional wounds, or simply a moment of peace and rejuvenation, Energy Healing has the power to unlock the innate healing wisdom within us all.

Three Misperceptions about attending a Yoga or Meditation Retreat

There are many misperceptions out there about what goes on at a yoga or meditation retreats. What do you imagine? Do you imagine a bunch of hippies smoking pot and gathering and chanting? Or perhaps, you have heard of sweat lodges. Well, all of that might be true. However, our retreats are just about that person seeking adventure, tranquility, clarity, peace, or maybe courage or tapping into the warrior or goddess within.

           Misperceptions:

            1. You will be doing yoga and meditation all day long.

Oh gosh, anything in excess is not balancing.

Retreats for us are about relaxing and rejuvenating; finding some space to just BE. We want them to be nurturing to body, mind and soul. On most yoga retreats there will be two scheduled classes per day, a rejuvenating (though accessible) mindful flow in the morning, and a more relaxing, restorative class in the evening.

Sessions are completely optional and centered around how you feel that day. If you just want to chill, then that’s totally fine! You'll always be encouraged to allow yourself to let the retreat experience be what's needed for you at that time. Some of our retreats focus on meditation, mindfulness and yoga nidra sessions with no active yoga, and again these are all optional, depending on your own needs and wants.

           2. You will be required to eat what we tell you.

This is your retreat! We won’t tell you what to do or how to be. We will provide beautiful foods that will nourish the body, the mind and the soul. We believe in freedom so you be free to eat what calls to you!

An important philosophy on our retreats is that food is not only fuel for our bodies - integral to our health and wellbeing - but something to look forward to and savor. We are able to cater to most dietary requirements. Just ask! Having a glass of wine over dinner is by no means discouraged on our yoga retreats (though more immersive mindfulness retreats are alcohol-free), though guests wishing to abstain will find it easy, with herbal teas aplenty!

           3. You need to be like a professional yogi.

Definitely a NO! What would that be anyway. If one thinks they are like a professional yogi, then they are not. Never done yoga, we welcome you! Been practicing yoga for a year, we welcome you! Been practicing yoga for 5 years then not for a year, we welcome you! We will meet you where you are, not where we want you to be or where you think you should be – but just where you are!

The Instagram effect has taken over: images of lithe young models in bendy yoga poses dominate our social media feeds, leaving many with an unrealistic view on what a ‘yogi’ looks like. From running both a yoga studio and a retreat business, we can answer that easily - people who practice yoga come in all shapes and sizes. Some are naturally slim, some are larger, some have natural flexibility, but many cannot touch their toes. We can guarantee that happiness will not be any more attainable with the simple ability to touch toes! Yoga is about awareness; it's an ancient meditation, born of marriage between breath and body - and that means absolutely anyone can join our retreats. Some of our retreats involve guided hikes, adapted to the particular needs of the group.

The 5 Most Important Things to Know About Balancing the Intuitive Energy Fields

What I have been seeing in the last 6 months, year and going back to 2020 is the chakra energy field that helps and supports us with our intuition and wisdom at a higher consciousness level is out of balance for many people. Then, the sacral chakra that governs over the physical body’s needs like food, water and shelter have also been compromised and out of balance.

Here are the 5 Most Important Things to Know:

The pineal gland is super important to take care of when it comes to keeping the third eye working at its best. When third eye is working at its best, you will have the ability to see truth, your thoughts are clear, you will have a good memory and have an inner knowing. So, taking care of the pineal gland so it does not get crystalized and compromised is essential.

Intuition activation comes from quieting the mind. Often times there is an overactive or underactive third eye creating lack of focus, goals and a higher purpose. What is the solution? Meditation. Meditation on a regular basis and not crisis meditating is valuable in tapping into the inner knowing.

Stop numbing! Excessive fluoride, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, stimulant, and depressant drugs, as well as busyness, are all numbing devices. Fluoride is commonly found in tap water and toothpaste and can calcify the pineal gland. Sugar can slow cognitive functioning and affect memory and sleep.

You know when we talk about the GUT INSTINCT. Well, if our gut is not in order, our instincts are not in order. So, to help balance the sacral energies of nourishment, which is a seed (bija) of this chakra, take in more alive foods that give back to your body, mind and soul. If you are eating poor quality foods that are processed and full of “artificial” and sugar, this will deplete the energy field.

Listen to your own soul! Yes, information is great. However, there is always more information and more information and more information. You can keep collecting data, statistics, reviews, and so on and so forth. Messages can be manipulated and twisted, propaganda is abundantly present and there is a social media influx of opinions. In the end, ask yourself – Am I listening to my own soul and instincts, despite ANY information from the outside world. What feels right for you? This is not a one time ask, but asking all the time. I know that might feel exhausting but it is so worth it in the end!
